Characoids of the World

Descrição

CHARACOIDS OF THE WORLD including tetras, piranhas, pencilfishes, headstanders, citharinids, distichodids, hatchetfishes and many others. Dr. Jacques Gery's CHARACOIDS OF THE WORLD is one of the most ambitious ichthyological works ever undertaken: the first modern survey of the suborder Characoidei, the group that includes harmless popular aquarium favorites like the cardinal and neon tetras as well as the much-romanticized (and much-maligned) piranhas and their relatives and such oddities as the blind cave fish. Tetras, piranhas, hatchet fishes, headstanders and all of the other fishes that until comparatively recently were all lumped together in the family Characidae are here given their proper taxonomic placement and shown in correct perspective to each other. Massive in scope and tremendously painstaking in its analysis, this book contains keys and descriptions to all families and subfamilies of characoid fishes, and almost every genus and species is briefly described or keyed; in many cases both description and key are provided. Of course the text is made even more meaningful and valuable because of its accompaniment by hundreds of color photographs as well as black and white photographs and illuminating line drawings. Inf act, an illustration of some type is provided for almost every genus and most species; most of the illustrations are in color, and the color photographs of obscure and very rare fishes make the book's value as an identifier of characoids greater than that of any other book. The many technical drawings are especially useful as diagnostic aids.
